Sit down opposite Heath Clinton at Phase 2 Interactive and one can’t help but notice the white oval sticker on the cover of his laptop. The decal simply bares the number 140.6.

Clinton explains 140.6 is the number of miles Ironman triathletes traverse: swimming 2.4 miles, biking 112 miles and running 26.2. He completed one in 2008.

“It’s all about goals,” he said. “I’m a big goal-setter.”

A similar drive is what Clinton brings to Phase 2, a developer of business, smart phone and iPad software founded by Mark Towler in 1998. Clinton joined Phase 2 in 2000 as a marketer and became president in 2003.

“In most environments, I’d be considered a techie, but not next to this team,” he said. The company employs 15, including project managers, designers and developers who can “jailbreak,” or unlock the operating system on, iPhones and more, he said.

Clients include Sonic Industries, Integris Health, the University of Oklahoma, Love’s Travel Stops & Country Stores, Minnesota-based franchiser Great Clips hair cutters and Bright Star Health Care, based in Chicago. Most work involves consulting and automation processes.

“We’ve built our business off referrals and repeat business,” Clinton said. “We have no sales people; just consistent work. We’ve resisted the opportunity to have investors or ramp up. Instead, we’ve chosen to have no debt, grow through our earnings and create our own destiny.”
