2. Briefly describe your day-to-day responsibilities.
I fly around the world speaking and consulting with organizations so day to day I work on building presentations, research, and building intellectual property…
3. What’s the most exciting business challenge you’ve been faced with?
In the past it has been building companies from scratch and getting them to be successful regardless the economic climate, or challenges. Today it is constantly standing in front of large audiences trying to deliver information that will help improves their careers through the use of technology.
4. What’s your definition of success?
It is a recipe. Three parts staying on God’s plan for me. One part, being a good husband, dad, and relative for family. One part being a good friend to others. And one part successfully applying my talents in the business world. Only the first one really counts, but while I am on this earth, I strive for the others as well. Oh, and maintaining my health and wellness while doing all of the above.
5. What’s the biggest lesson you learned from a mistake you (or your team/company) made?
Oh my gosh, there are tons of them. I am not even sure what the biggest is. I think the first has to be that I thought I was the one in complete control of my destiny. When I finally clued in that there was a force much bigger than me, life improved quite a bit. As to a business mistake, it would probably be that I always thought everyone was honest and trustworthy and I learned the hard way that some people are not.
6. How has technology improved your business and your life?
It has made me ten times more productive as I was back in the 80′s. I can communicate with so many more people now. I can learn so much more each day about what is going in in the world. I have huge access to information now. In my life, it provides new and instant forms of entertainment, and has broadened my view of the world tremendously. It is literally a different world for me now than it used to be, and I like it much better now. I yearn to see what it will be like in another ten years!
7. What’s your favorite app and why?
Hmmm, as boring as it sounds, email. It provides an incredible tool for me to communicate with many people from all over the world in one day. If I told you about a cool app, it would be Keynote on my Mac which helps me do very nice looking presentations when I speak. An app most people don’t know about that rocks is joinspeaker.com which was built here in OKC and connect audiences or classes with the person up front – works like a dream.
8. What’s the best business advice you’ve ever received?
“Life aint no dress rehearsal.” You only get one chance to co through this world so do everything you can the first time – that means be determined, never give up, learn your lessons, and be a good example for others…
9. Website, blog or book you consider required reading.
All of the above and more – podcasts, Twitter, Facebook, etc. I think you have to read all forms everyday. It is a knowledge economy and the smart people win. To get smarter you have to digest more than other people. I digest everything I can…
10. What’s next?
Tomorrow … just kidding. For me, I will write another book soon, I will keep speaking at larger and larger events. I will keep learning, and constantly strive to be a thought leader who helps the world see technology in new ways.
