Franchises, SBA and BancFirst

Franchise owner Donald W. Knight applied for his first SBA loan in 1994 to start a Subway restaurant franchise in Hugo, Oklahoma. "I sent proposals to five banks, three denied me and two were interested," said Knight, a former manager for E-Systems, an aircraft modification company in Greenville, Texas. He said Kent Faison, president of BancFirst Commercial Capital in Oklahoma City, and Vice President Mark Miller drove to Hugo to meet with him to discuss his prospects. Hugo, Knight's hometown, was the only Subway franchise location available in the region at the time. Faison said Knight was typical of many first-time SBA borrowers. He had no track record in the type of business he wanted to open, and, at the time, was not particularly attractive to traditional lenders. "They (BancFirst) assisted me in obtaining much-needed capital from an SBA 7(a) loan," said Knight. "The SBA has always been there to support me. It has really allowed me to go from being employed to being self-employed." Over the years, Knight has obtained 10 SBA loans and he still owns the Hugo Subway - as well as two Oklahoma City Subways, a Smokehouse Barbeque Grille and a Rusty's Frozen Custard. He is building a Subway in Paris, Texas, which is set to open in mid-April and will employ about 15 people.
